Visiting Jurmala In Winter

Frankly, I worried a little that I would miss San Francisco, but this one month in Jurmala was just not enough. And now, sadly, my winter holiday in Jurmala is over. The whole month, like an hourglass, poured away the minutes smoothly and uninterrupted. I was very happy to spend this precious time with my parents and sister. Jurmala, as usual, pleased me with fluffy snow and hard frosts. Every morning I was waking up in a new snow-white fairy tale, feasting my eyes on the rimed trees and dancing snowflakes.

Christmas week and post-New Year's week were full of bright lights, loud conversations in cafes and restaurants, the endless smiles of strangers. Then an incredible silence came into the town and wrapped everything around with a warm and melancholic mood. Sometimes I could hear the crunch of snow under the feet and screaming of seagulls... just perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle to dream while walking on the empty beach of the icy Baltic and then curling my hands around a warming cup of tea or mulled wine in a cozy cafe on Jomas street

By the way, I was insanely pleased to see that my favorite places are still open and still meet their guests with warmth and a variety of goodies, even in the winter season. Cafe Kafija in the beginning of the Jomas street still offers the most delectable cakes and custom teas, and my favorite Asian restaurant in Latvia, Sue's Asia, pampers its guests with large portions of Thai, Chinese and Indian cuisine. New restaurants also didn't leave me indifferent. I'll be definitely back again and again for a honey cake in the cafe-bakery De Gusto, or for extraordinary selection of sushi in Tokyo City, or for the divine Uzbek pilaf and festive atmosphere in Uzbekistana. It was nice and peaceful in Jurmala, I even didn't want to leave it for Riga even through to go to Riga takes just 30 minutes by train. I had a truly relaxing vacation... exactly what I needed at the beginning of the new year!

I do love the winter sun in Jurmala. It doesn't rise too high and a perfect light is everywhere on everything all day long! I also really saw for the first time how beautiful the old houses are around Jurmala. They retain so much warmth and hold so many stories. Walking the streets I could feel their secrets hiding just behind their beautiful windows.
